RITUAL OF AN APOLOGY
(FOR SINGAPOREANS)
2017
“We need to make our American friends know that they still matter.”
“That we feel their pain, and that we need them to do the right thing now.”
“That this is not just about flogging another dead horse! We much rather that they do this with us together, sensibly.”
Ritual of an Apology (For Singaporeans) (2017) is a tutorial aimed at helping the (Singaporean) audience apply the concept of the performance of an apology, in order to propose Chinese Socialism as a means of saving America from itself. This work was created in the difficult period leading up to the 2017 election of the US President. The video tutorial presumes the desire of the audience to speak to Americans, and audience members are encouraged to sign up for later workshops where they will rehearse playing the role of the surrogate.
In the tutorial, the performer collects overheard phrases in New York in the period leading up to the US election, and proposes a model script for its intended American listener. These speeches illustrate the various modes of emotions, including frustration, resignation, and logical analysis, in order to persuade its listener. Audience members are supposed to learn from this video tutorial the possible modes of performance of an apology, as a means of persuasion.
